What do I do when the pain of a breakup has turned my life upside down? Troy Hoffman discusses the all-consuming pain of heartbreak. There is no getting around the awful feeling of losing someone you love and the life you envisioned for your future with that person. But there are things we can do to keep our sense of self-worth and use the experience as a stepping stone in becoming who we were put on this planet to become.

Happiness is about becoming the best version of ourselves we can possibly be. Unfortunately, breakups can have us doing an about-face into self-destruction. I’ve been there – several times. For a second, try to forget about the breakup and the issues and what you could have done better, or how that person hurt you. Are you happy with the person you are? Are you getting the results you want out of life?

It always comes back into who we believe ourselves to be. Each and every single one of us is special. We are dynamic individuals. Are you giving yourself enough credit for the amazing being that you are? Or are you riddled with negative self-talk? Are you making sure to be grateful for and take care of the body that houses your life? Or are you lying in bed listening to sad songs?

You’ve got to will yourself to care for yourself right now. Be your own best friend. The truth is, you are the only person that can help you right now. You’ve got to do the work. As soon as you catch yourself going done that road of heartache, stop and redirect. Go for that walk. Visit a friend. Meditate. Read a good book. GROW.

Every relationship is a gift. Look for the lesson. Soon enough you will realize the obstacles you face in life help you to grow into the person that you are destined to become.
